Mink Fur Berets

A tall black mink fur hat built for proper winter: the crown rises well above a standard beret, the fur is dense and glossy, and an insulated lining sits inside for extra warmth. There's no decoration at all; the height and the fur are the design. Made by hand in Ukraine from farmed pelts, it comes with a 55–58 cm or a 58–60 cm band.

Height on top. Warmth inside.

One of the Warmest Fur Hats in Our Beret Range

Two things set this model apart from the slimmer berets. The tall crown holds more warm air over your head, and the insulated lining adds a second layer between the pelt and your hair. Together they make it comfortable down to around −20°C in still, dry cold, noticeably more than a plain lined beret. In strong wind the ears still feel it first; lift a scarf over them, or pick a style from our fur ushankas with earflaps.

Cold Weather Hats That Still Look Elegant

Most cold weather hats are bulky knits or trapper styles with flaps, practical but rarely elegant. A tall black mink crown gives you the warmth without the sporty look. Worn over a long dark coat, it adds height to the whole silhouette and reads as polished rather than outdoorsy. Black also keeps the volume grounded: in a pale shade, a crown this tall could look top-heavy, in black it looks sleek.

A Tall Hat for City Winters and Cold Trips

It suits places where winter is serious: long walks in a frosty city, Christmas markets, a trip somewhere snowy. Since mink is light, the height doesn't mean weight; most women stop noticing it after a few minutes. For softer, packable alternatives, look at our knitted hats with fur, or compare silhouettes across all fur hats for women.

Questions People Ask

Can I wear a thin headband under it in extreme cold?

Yes, a thin knitted or fleece headband over the ears works well and turns the beret into a warmer setup for −20°C days. Keep it slim, no thicker than a few millimetres, so the band of the hat still sits evenly. If you plan to do this often, measure your head with the headband on and choose the size by that number, especially near 58 cm.

At what temperature should I switch from this beret to an ushanka?

Think about wind and time outside rather than only the thermometer. For city walks in calm frost, this beret handles about −20°C. If you'll stand outside for an hour or more, face strong wind, or temperatures drop below −20°C, earflaps make a real difference. An ushanka covers the ears and the back of the neck, which a beret, however warm, never does.

What does the insulated lining add?

It adds a thin warm layer between the skin side of the fur and the fabric that touches your hair. Mink already insulates well, but on very cold days the lining slows heat loss through the crown and makes the hat feel cosier from the moment you put it on. It also makes the inside softer and smoother, so the hat glides over hair instead of gripping it.

Tall crown or the classic round black beret: which is right for me?

Choose the tall crown if you want maximum warmth and a striking silhouette, or if you live somewhere with long, hard winters. Choose the classic round beret if you prefer a lower, quieter shape that fits under hoods and goes everywhere without comment. Both are black mink. The tall one is more of a statement and noticeably warmer; the round one is the easier everyday hat.

Is a tall fur hat practical in a car or on public transport?

Mostly, yes. In a car, the crown may touch a low roof, so many women take the hat off and place it crown-up on the passenger seat or their lap. On buses and trains it's fine to keep it on; just mind the doorways and luggage racks. Avoid squashing it into a small bag; carry it in hand or in a roomy tote instead.

Is this a good hat for a trip to a very cold country?

Yes, for winter cities from Helsinki to Montreal it's a great travel companion. It's light, warm and smart enough for restaurants and museums, unlike most technical hats. Pack it in a hat box or on top of soft clothes in your carry-on. For long outdoor days, such as husky rides or northern lights tours, add an ushanka or a fur hood.

Will a high-crown fur hat get too hot indoors?

Probably, if you keep it on for long. The same tall crown and lining that keep you warm outside hold heat in a heated shop or café too. In short stops it's fine; for anything over ten or fifteen minutes, remove it and carry it, or set it crown-up on a chair. Avoid hanging it on a peg, which can dent the high dome.

Is such a tall crown too much for everyday wear?

Less than you'd expect. In black, volume looks sleek rather than theatrical, especially with a long dark coat or a simple parka. It becomes dramatic only when everything else is loud too. Keep the scarf plain and the rest of the outfit simple, and the hat reads as confident, not costume. In very cold cities, tall fur hats are simply part of everyday winter dress.
