Men's Fur Hats

Black can look severe and brown can look rustic. Grey lands in the middle, and that's exactly why it's so easy to live with. This grey sheepskin ushanka goes with a navy parka, an olive field jacket or a charcoal coat without a second thought, and it keeps your ears covered when the thermometer drops hard.

Soft color. Serious warmth.

Grey Sheepskin Ushanka with Snap Earflaps

Leather forms the outer face; thick sheepskin wool sits against your head. Instead of ties, the earflaps close with metal snaps, so you can drop them, fasten them under the chin or clip them up over the crown with one hand, even in gloves. Metal hardware doesn't turn brittle in deep frost the way cheap plastic does, and the snaps stay put when the wind tugs at the flaps.

Every piece of sheepskin differs a little, so the grey on your hat may sit a shade lighter or darker than the one in the photos.

One of the Easiest Cold Weather Hats to Wear Every Day

Fasten the flaps down and this fur winter hat holds up to about −25°C. Snap them up and it becomes a tidy round hat for days near −10°C, ready to go back down in seconds when you step out of the car into a crosswind.

Made by hand in Ukraine, it's built for 10–15 seasons of regular wear. We also make a black sheepskin ushanka with classic ties, and our ushanka collection covers the other fur options. For something lighter on milder days, see the knitted fur hats.

Questions People Ask

59.5 cm falls between two ranges. Which one fits?

The 60–61 range. At 59.5 cm you're past the top of the middle range, and thick-wool sheepskin has no stretch to give. In the larger range the hat sits at the right depth over the ears, and once the flaps are snapped under the chin it stays firmly in place, even in a strong wind.

Why is this hat sold in size ranges instead of single sizes?

Because the wool lining adapts. Thick sheepskin wool compresses slightly where it meets your head, so one hat fits comfortably across two centimetres. If you're at the lower end of a range, the fit feels snug at first and eases within a week or two. At the upper end it feels right from day one. Exactly on a boundary, choose the larger range.

Snaps or ties on a sheepskin ushanka: which is more practical?

Snaps are quicker, ties are more adjustable. Metal snaps open and close in a second, with one hand and without taking off gloves, which suits people going in and out of buildings all day. Ties let you choose exactly how tight the flaps sit under the chin. For daily commuting snaps win; for long hours in one position, ties have a slight edge.

Is this ushanka warmer than the peaked sheepskin cap in the same grey?

Yes, because it covers more. The ushanka has a front flap and full earflaps that close under the chin, so it protects more of the face and handles harder frost. The visor cap has a stiff leather peak that keeps bright light off your eyes on clear, frosty days. For deep cold pick the ushanka; for bright, moderate days the visor cap.

Does grey sheepskin hide road salt and dirt better than black?

Yes, noticeably. White salt marks and light dust show up quickly on black leather, while grey disguises them until you get a chance to clean the hat. Once the leather is dry, a damp cloth lifts the marks and a touch of cream restores the finish. Brown also hides dirt well, but grey has the edge on salty city streets and pale, dusty country roads.

What colors and jackets go best with a grey fur winter hat?

Almost anything in the cool or neutral range. Navy, charcoal, black and olive all pair cleanly, and grey looks especially sharp with a dark blue parka or a black wool coat. With camel or brown it reads more relaxed and outdoorsy. A grey hat with a grey coat can look flat, so add contrast with a darker scarf or gloves.

Is a sheepskin ushanka good for ice fishing or long hours in a hunting blind?

Yes, it's a strong choice for both. Sitting still in frost is where most hats fail, because the body produces little heat. With the flaps snapped down, thick wool covers the ears, cheeks and back of the neck. Leather sheds spray and wet snow. For days below −25°C or with a fierce wind on open ice, add a hood or neck gaiter on top.

Is it normal for a new sheepskin hat to lose a few fibers?

Yes, a little, and only at first. New sheepskin can release a few loose fibers from the cut edges during the first weeks, especially on dark clothing. Give the inside a gentle comb and a shake outdoors before the first wear, and the shedding stops quickly. If it continues after a month, contact us and we'll take a look.
