Ushanka Hats

Leather on top, silver fox all around. It's a cut borrowed from old open-cockpit flying caps — snug crown, long flaps, strap under the chin — and softened with enough fur to stop traffic.

On this women's fur hat, the crown is smooth black leather, stitched in panels so it follows the shape of the head. Silver fox takes over from the forehead down: a full, rounded brim, then two long ear flaps that reach past the jaw. Every guard hair carries its own band of white, so the fur looks frosted in daylight and almost charcoal in the evening.

Why a Leather Crown on a Fur Trapper Hat?

Wind and wet snow. Leather sheds both. A fur crown can soak through in a sleety walk; this one wipes dry in seconds. It also keeps the hat lighter and lower on the head, so the silver fox gets all the attention.

Warmth comes where you need it most. The fox wraps forehead, temples and ears, and the closed leather top blocks cold air from above — a pairing that holds up to roughly −25°C. Each fur hat is assembled by hand in our family workshop in Ukraine from farm-raised fox and leather.

Two Ways to Wear This Women's Aviator Hat

Flaps down, fastened with the snap strap under the chin: full coverage, nothing gets in. Flaps tied back with the cord at the nape: the fox sweeps behind the ears, the face opens up, and the hat reads more city than tundra. Those are the two positions it's built for.

Black leather and grey-silver fur sit well with almost any outerwear — a long black wool coat, a camel trench with a thick scarf, a short shearling jacket. Like silver fox but want a fur crown instead? See our black mink ushanka with silver fox. More shapes and furs live in our women's fur hats.

Questions People Ask

Leather crown or black mink crown — which silver fox hat should I choose?

Pick leather if you walk a lot in wet weather or want a lighter hat that sits lower. Pick the black mink version if you prefer fur all over and a softer, fuller look. The silver fox frame is the same on both. One practical difference: this leather model's flaps go down or tie back, while the mink ushanka can also fold its flaps up over the crown.

Is this an aviator hat or an ushanka?

A bit of both. The fitted leather crown, chin strap and long side flaps come straight from the aviator hat — the kind pilots wore before cockpits were enclosed. The generous fur brim and fox ear flaps are closer to an ushanka or trapper hat. In practice, think of it as a women's leather aviator hat finished with full silver fox trim.

Can the ear flaps fold up over the top?

No — on this model the flaps work in two positions only: down and fastened under the chin, or pulled back and tied behind the head. The leather crown is cut close to the head, so there's no room for the fox to rest on top without crushing the fur. If you want a three-position hat, the mink-crown ushankas in our collection fold up.

How do I look after the leather crown?

Wipe snow and rain off with a dry cloth as soon as you're indoors, then let the hat dry away from radiators. Once or twice a winter, rub in a thin layer of colorless leather conditioner and buff it off after ten minutes. That keeps the leather supple and stops salt marks. Keep conditioner well away from the fox — it mats the fur.

I measure 60 cm — will the 58–59 size work?

Probably not comfortably. The drawstring narrows the hat within its range but can't stretch it beyond 59 cm, and leather has very little give. A hat that's too tight presses on the forehead within an hour. If you're right at 60 cm, message us before ordering — we'll tell you honestly whether this model will fit or suggest a style with a larger size.

Will the leather crack in very cold weather?

Not with normal care. Good hat leather stays flexible in frost; it cracks when it dries out from heat, not from cold. The usual culprits are radiators, car heaters blowing straight at it, and hair dryers. Dry it at room temperature, condition it once or twice a season, and the crown will keep its smooth surface for many winters.

Does the chin strap stay fastened in strong wind?

Yes. The strap closes with metal snaps rather than ties, so it doesn't loosen as you walk or turn your head. Left unfastened, the flaps still cover your ears on a calm day; snapping the strap matters on open streets and bridges, where gusts try to lift the fox away from your face. When the flaps are tied back, the strap simply hangs behind with them, out of the way.

Can I wear this silver fox fur hat with glasses?

Yes. The flaps fall outside the temple arms of most frames, and the fox brim sits above the eyebrows, not on the lenses. With the flaps fastened under the chin, glasses stay put and don't press against the face. If your frames are very wide, wearing the flaps tied back gives the arms more room.
