Men's Fur Hats

When people picture the warmest winter hat there is, this is usually the image: a classic ushanka, fur from crown to earflaps, ties under the chin. Here it's made entirely of black mink, which keeps the traditional shape but makes it sleeker, lighter and far more refined than the bulky hats you may remember.

All mink. All winter.

Classic Black Fur Ushanka in Full Mink

Nothing here is leather or suede. Crown, front flap and both earflaps are mink, so the fur traps warm air all around your head, not just at the edges. Short, dense black mink lies smooth and has a deep, quiet sheen. The earflaps knot below the chin in hard frost, behind the head when the wind drops, or up on top when you're indoors.

The Warmest Mink Fur Ushanka in Our Range

Because the crown is fur too, this hat goes further than any of our mixed-material ushankas: with the flaps tied down it stays comfortable to about −30°C. On milder days, flaps up, it becomes a tidy, rounded hat that pairs with a dark overcoat as well as a parka.

It's assembled by hand in Ukraine from matched pelts and is made to serve 15–25 winters. To compare other furs in the same shape, visit our ushanka collection; for something lighter in the same fur, look at the mink berets.

Questions People Ask

58 cm on the tape: will the 58 pinch once the flaps are knotted?

No, 58 is right. Tying the flaps under the chin pulls the hat down evenly but doesn't tighten the band around your forehead. The fur inside the band compresses slightly over the first week, so a snug first fitting turns comfortable. Size up only if the tape reads between two numbers, for example 58.5 cm.

Does a fur crown make this warmer than the suede-topped version?

Yes. Here the crown is fur as well, so there's insulating loft over the whole head, not only at the band and flaps. That's why this hat is rated to about −30°C, while the suede-crown version is comfortable to about −25°C. The all-mink hat also looks fuller and more traditional; the suede one is slimmer and more casual.

Does this mink ushanka come in other colors?

Yes, the same classic model is made in three shades: black, brown and pastel, each listed as a separate product. Black is the most formal and the easiest to pair with dark coats. Brown suits camel, olive and earth tones. Pastel is the lightest of the three, a warm beige that looks gentle next to ivory or stone-colored coats.

What makes a full mink ushanka the priciest in the range?

It simply takes much more fur. Covering the crown, front flap and earflaps entirely in mink needs several matched pelts, and each one has to be cut and joined so the nap runs the same way across the hat. Mixed designs use leather or suede on the crown, which saves fur and labour. The result here is the warmest, most traditional version.

Will a full-fur ushanka be too warm in milder weather?

Below about −5°C, no. With the flaps tied up on top, the hat is comfortable for city walks down to around −10°C. Near or above freezing it can feel warm on a long walk, especially in a heated bus or store, so take it off indoors. For mild, damp winters, a mink cap or beret is the more practical everyday choice.

Mink or fox ushanka: how do they compare?

Mink is short, sleek and dense; fox is long, airy and dramatic. A mink ushanka keeps a clean outline, handles daily wear and brushing well, and looks smart with tailored coats. Fox frames the face in a big, soft halo and makes more of a statement. Both are very warm. Choose mink for everyday use, fox when you want the fur to stand out.

Will the fur on the earflap tips wear from rubbing on my collar?

Only slowly, after many seasons. The tips of the earflaps brush against coat collars and scarves, and over years that's where mink shows wear first. To keep it minimal, tie the flaps up when you wear a high collar, and avoid rough wool or zips rubbing in the same place. A furrier can refresh worn tips if needed.

Can a furrier repair or refresh the hat after years of use?

Yes, and that's one reason a mink ushanka lasts so long. A furrier can replace a tired lining, re-stitch loose ties, clean and glaze the fur to restore its sheen, and patch small worn areas with matching mink. A check every year or two, ideally before you store the hat for summer, keeps it in top condition for decades.
