Women's Fur Hats

No flaps, no straps, no leather. Barbara is pure silver fox, shaped into a soft round crown that sits on the head like a cloud.

The fox runs all the way around and over the top, so there's no seam line breaking the volume. Each guard hair is dark at the base and frosted white at the tip, and where the pelts meet, a darker band curls around the crown in a loose spiral. It reads as a single sculpted shape — a women's fur hat you notice from the silhouette before you see any detail.

A Round Fox Hat Instead of an Ushanka

Ear flaps are perfect for blizzards. They're less perfect for a theatre foyer, a restaurant terrace or a walk through the old town on a dry, frosty evening. That's where Barbara fits. It keeps the head and the tops of the ears warm, frames the face with a halo of silver, and comes off without a tangle of ties.

The warm padding underneath weighs almost nothing, so the hat never feels heavy on the head. With the fox pulled slightly down over the ears, it's comfortable to around −15°C. Every Barbara is shaped and stitched by hand in our family workshop in Ukraine from farm-raised silver fox, with the pelts turned so the dark stripe spirals evenly.

How to Wear a Silver Fox Hat Like Barbara

Set it level for a classic, symmetrical look, or tip it a little toward the back of the head to show more of the face and lengthen the silhouette. Sleek hair under the brim keeps the line clean; loose waves spilling out at the sides soften it.

Silver and black go with almost any coat, but this fox hat looks sharpest with a fitted black or charcoal wool coat and a slim scarf. For deep frost with full ear cover, the same silver fox comes on our black mink ushanka with ear flaps, and on the leather aviator hat if you prefer a lighter crown.

Sizing

Size Option Head Circumference US Hat Size Fit
Small 55–58 cm (21.7–22.8") 6⅞–7¼ Inner drawstring keeps the crown steady
Large 58–60 cm (22.8–23.6") 7¼–7½ Inner drawstring keeps the crown steady

A round hat should sit firmly without pressing. Measure around the forehead and the fullest point at the back. Exactly 58 cm fits both options: take the smaller one for a snug hold, or the larger one if you like a little room or wear your hair full.

Questions People Ask

Does the Barbara fox hat cover my ears?

Partly. Pulled down to its usual wearing position, the fox brim covers the top half of the ears and the long guard hair falls over the rest. That's enough for a dry frosty day around −10°C to −15°C. For wind or deeper cold, a hat with ear flaps protects better — Barbara is designed for elegance first and warmth second, not the other way around.

Why does the dark stripe swirl around the crown?

That's the darker center line of each silver fox pelt. Instead of hiding it, we turn the pelts as we sew so the band curls around the hat in one continuous spiral. It gives the round shape movement and depth. Because every pelt is a little different, the exact path of the swirl varies slightly from one Barbara to the next.

Can I keep this fur hat on indoors?

Yes, and many women do at theatres, restaurants and winter events where coats are checked but hats stay on. A round fur hat without flaps reads as an accessory rather than outerwear, much like a beret. Just be aware that a heated room plus a padded lining gets warm within half an hour, so you may still want to take it off eventually.

How do I put on a round fur hat so it sits right?

Hold it with both hands at the sides, set the front edge just above your eyebrows, then ease the back down over the head. Avoid pulling it straight down from the top — that flattens the fox. Once it's on, tighten the inner drawstring if the hat shifts when you turn your head. A quick shake of the head settles the guard hair into place.

Will a fox fur hat flatten my hair or cause static?

Less than wool. Fur doesn't generate much static against hair, and the padded lining stops the crown from pressing directly onto your styling. Some flattening at the crown is normal after an hour or two of wear. Carry a small comb, or choose a hairstyle with volume at the sides rather than on top, and you'll take the hat off looking put together.

Is silver fox warm enough without ear flaps?

For city winters, usually yes. Silver fox is very insulating, and a round hat keeps heat in at the top of the head, where a lot of it escapes. What it can't do is seal the sides of the face against strong wind. If your winters regularly drop below −20°C or you spend hours outside, pair Barbara with a fur headband or scarf, or choose an ushanka.

Does Barbara work with a fur collar or a hooded coat?

With a fur collar, yes — keep the collar in a contrasting fur or a plain wool coat so the two don't compete. With a hood, wear the hood down; pulling a hood over a round fox hat crushes the volume that makes it special. A slim cashmere scarf is the easiest match and keeps the silhouette clean from neck to crown.

How should I store a round silver fox hat?

Keep it on a round object of similar size — a large bowl turned upside down, a hat stand or a ball wrapped in tissue — so the crown never collapses. Cover it loosely with a cotton bag and keep it in a cool, dark closet. Never stack anything on top of it, and never store it in plastic, which traps moisture against the leather side.
