Ushanka Hats
Black and silver. Two colors, and somehow the whole winter wardrobe sorts itself around them.
This women's fox fur hat pairs a crown of black mink with silver fox everywhere else — the tall brim over the forehead, the outside of both ear flaps, and the inner side that rests against your face. Look closely at the fox. Each long guard hair is dark at the root, banded with white, then dark again at the very tip. That banding is what makes silver fox shimmer when you turn your head, and it's why no two of these hats look exactly alike.
What Makes a Silver Fox Hat Different
Silver fox is a color phase of the red fox, and the pelts are sorted by how much silver runs through them. We pick ones with an even spread, so the brim reads as one continuous halo instead of patches of light and dark. Against the matte black mink on top, the contrast gets sharper. Quiet crown. Loud frame.
Underneath sits a padded insulated lining that keeps the hat light while the fur does the heavy lifting. Fox brim, fox flaps, mink crown, warm lining — together they make a black ushanka rated for about −25°C. It's built in our family workshop in Ukraine, cut and stitched by hand from farm-raised fur.
Styling a Black Fur Hat With Silver Fox Trim
A dark fur hat forgives a lot. City slush, bus seats, the odd brush against a dirty car door — black mink simply doesn't show it the way pale fur would. That makes this one the practical pick for daily wear, not just weekends.
Pair it with a black wool coat for something close to evening wear, or throw it over a grey puffer and jeans. Prefer a lighter look? The same construction comes in white mink with arctic fox. And if you'd like more mink options in other shapes, browse our mink hats.

Questions People Ask
Should I choose this black ushanka or the white mink and arctic fox version?
It comes down to how often you'll wear it. The black mink and silver fox hat handles everyday city use better, since dark fur hides dirt and salt spray. The white version is softer-looking and brighter around the face, but it needs more careful handling. Both share the same cut, sizes and warmth, so the choice is really about color and routine.
Is a fox fur hat warmer than an all-mink hat?
Around the face and ears, yes. Fox hair is much longer than mink, so it traps a thicker layer of still air exactly where frostbite usually starts. That's why this hat uses fox for the brim and flaps but mink for the crown, where a flatter fur sits better under a hood. An all-mink hat suits milder days; this one is meant for −25°C.
Does silver fox shed, and how much is normal?
A few loose hairs during the first week or two are normal for any long-haired fox — they're guard hairs that were already loose after sewing. Give the hat a gentle shake outdoors before the first wears. After that, shedding drops to almost nothing. Constant clumps falling out would signal a pelt problem, and that's something we'd want to hear about.
What's inside the hat — is it fur all the way through?
The fur is on the outside and on the inner face of each ear flap, where silver fox touches your cheeks. Inside the crown there's a padded insulated lining. It adds warmth without weight, keeps the leather side of the pelts away from your hair, and makes the drawstring possible, since the cord runs through the lining band to adjust the fit.
Will the fox brim on this women's fur hat get flattened under a hood?
For a short walk, no — fox guard hairs are springy and lift back within minutes once the hood comes off. Hours under a tight hood will press them down, though. When that happens, shake the hat sharply a few times, then let it sit on a form overnight. The brim recovers fully. If you wear hoods every day, push the hat slightly back so the hood rests on the mink crown.
Can I wear the ear flaps tied behind my head?
Yes — that's the third way to wear an ushanka, besides flaps down and flaps up. Tie the cords at the back of the neck, and the fox flaps sweep backward like a frame around the face, leaving the ears partly open. It's a good middle setting for around −5°C, when full coverage feels like too much but you still want the fox brim on show.
Is silver fox the same thing as black fox or blue fox?
No, they're different. Silver fox is a color phase of the red fox: dark fur with white bands on the guard hairs, which gives the frosted shimmer you see here. Black fox, in fur-trade terms, usually means silver fox with very little silver showing. Blue fox comes from the arctic fox and looks grey-blue overall. On this black fox fur hat, the silver bands are deliberately visible.
Is this black fox fur hat a good gift if I don't know her exact size?
It's one of the safer fur gifts, because there are only two size options and the drawstring smooths out small differences. Most women's heads fall between 55 and 58 cm, so that range is the default pick. If she wears her hair very thick or full, the larger size is safer. Black and silver also works with nearly every coat color, which takes the guesswork out of styling.
