Ushanka Hats
Golden, tawny, streaked with black. No two raccoon pelts look the same, and this hat makes the most of it.
Every visible part is raccoon fur — the crown, the deep brim, both long ear flaps. The underfur is a warm honey-beige; the guard hairs grow out past it and end in dark tips, which gives the whole raccoon hat that wild, striped texture you can spot from across the street. It's a women's fur hat with real presence, and it doesn't need any other material to carry it.
What Makes Raccoon Fur Different
Raccoon has some of the longest, toughest guard hair used in hatmaking. That's good news twice over. First, it sheds snow and light rain before moisture reaches the dense layer beneath. Second, it resists matting and rubbing far better than softer furs, which is why raccoon collars and hats often outlast the coats they were bought with.
Inside there's a padded insulated lining, the same one we use in our mink ushankas. Between that and the thick raccoon all around, the hat is rated for roughly −25°C. Each one is cut and sewn by hand in our family workshop in Ukraine from farm-raised raccoon, with pelts matched so the stripes run in a balanced pattern on both flaps.
Two Ways to Wear This Raccoon Trapper Hat
Ear flaps down, snapped under the chin with the leather strap — that's the full-cover setting for wind and deep frost. Ear flaps pulled back and tied behind the head opens the face and turns the hat into something closer to a big, rounded fur cap.
The warm golden tone pairs easily with camel, chocolate, olive and denim, and it looks especially good against a dark brown or black coat. Want the same shape in other furs? See our black mink ushanka with silver fox or the white mink ushanka with arctic fox.

Questions People Ask
Is this a coonskin cap like the Davy Crockett hat?
No — same fur, very different hat. The classic coonskin cap is a round cap with a raccoon tail hanging down the back and no ear protection. This is a raccoon fur ushanka: a full brim around the face, long ear flaps that fasten under the chin, and a padded lining for real winter cold. It's built for frost and wind rather than for a frontier costume.
Is raccoon fur warmer than fox?
They're close in warmth; the difference is in how the fur behaves. Fox hair is softer and fluffier, so it feels lighter around the face. Raccoon guard hair is longer and coarser, which makes it better at shedding snow and holding its shape in wind. For long walks in wet, cold weather, raccoon tends to be the more practical of the two.
Will my hat look exactly like the photos?
Very close, but not identical, and that's normal for raccoon. Each pelt has its own balance of golden underfur and black-tipped guard hair, so the stripe pattern and the exact shade vary slightly from hat to hat. We match pelts within each hat so both ear flaps look alike, and the overall tone stays in the same honey-beige range you see here.
How long does a raccoon fur hat last?
With ordinary care, 15–25 years is realistic. Raccoon is one of the hardest-wearing furs used in headwear — the guard hairs resist rubbing at the brim and flaps, where other furs thin out first. Store it in a cool closet in a breathable bag over summer, keep it away from radiators, and have it professionally cleaned only when it genuinely needs it.
Does a golden raccoon hat suit warm or cool skin tones?
It's most flattering on warm and neutral undertones — the honey color picks up golden hues in the skin. On cool, pinkish complexions it still works well, especially with a dark coat or scarf between the fur and the face, which lets the black tips in the raccoon do the framing. Bright lipstick in coral or brick red ties the look together.
Will the raccoon guard hairs feel scratchy around the face?
Most people find them comfortable. The longer, firmer guard hairs sit on the outer surface, while the side touching your cheeks is dominated by the soft, dense underfur. If you have very sensitive skin, wearing the flaps tied back keeps fur away from the cheeks and jawline while the brim still covers your forehead and ears.
Can I drive while wearing this raccoon fur hat?
Yes, ideally with the flaps tied back. That keeps your side vision clear for mirror checks and lane changes. With the flaps down, the fur sits close to the temples and can block part of your peripheral view, so it's better to tie them back before setting off and bring them down again once you're walking outdoors.
Can I wear this women's raccoon hat with a hooded parka?
Yes. The hat is fairly voluminous, so wear the parka hood down behind it, or pull the hood over only in heavy snow and accept that it will press the crown a little. Raccoon fur recovers well — a few shakes indoors restore the shape. Many women prefer leaving the hood down, since the raccoon brim and flaps already cover everything a hood would.
