Cloche & Flapper Hats – Cashmere, Wool, Fur, Leather, Linen, Cotton
All Hats & Caps » Cloche Hats & Flapper Hats
There's a reason cloche hats and flapper hats never really go out of style. Born in the 1920s, this bell-shaped silhouette has a way of framing the face that feels both dramatic and effortless. We make ours by hand, one at a time, choosing materials for how they wear through each season — not just how they look on day one.
Winter: Cashmere, Wool, and Fur
Cashmere is the standout here. It's light enough to layer under a coat hood, warm enough to skip the scarf, and it holds its shape better than almost anything else we work with. Our wool cloche hats do a similar job at a slightly different price point — dense felted wool that blocks wind and keeps the crown from collapsing after a season of wear. For the coldest days, we also cut this same silhouette in farm-raised rabbit and mink fur — less packable than wool, but nothing else comes close for warmth. All three work as a winter cloche hat without adding bulk.
Spring and Summer: Cotton and Linen
Not every cloche hat needs to be a winter piece. We cut lighter versions from cotton and linen for warmer months — breathable, packable, and still holding that same close-fitting crown. These are the ones you throw in a bag for a weekend away and don't think twice about.
Fall: Leather, Suede, and Sheepskin
For the in-between months, our leather, suede, and sheepskin flapper hats bring a structured, slightly rock-and-roll feel that pairs well with a blazer or a simple slip dress — warm enough for cooling weather without the full commitment of a winter fur piece.
Who Wears a Flapper Hat Today
Honestly? Anyone who wants an accessory that does more than block the sun. A women's cloche hat works for office wear when you want something with a bit of vintage character, and it works just as well styled down for weekends. This isn't a costume piece — it's meant to be worn on repeat, season after season.
Handmade, Start to Finish
Every hat in this collection is cut, blocked, and finished by hand in our workshop. No two are perfectly identical — that's the trade-off you make for something that isn't mass-produced. If you're deciding between materials: cashmere, wool and fur suit winter; cotton and linen suit spring and summer; leather, suede and sheepskin suit fall.

Questions People Ask
What is a cloche hat and what makes it different from other women's hats?
A cloche hat is a close-fitting, bell-shaped hat that sits low on the forehead, framing the face rather than shading it the way a wide-brim hat does. The name comes from the French word for "bell." Unlike a beret or newsboy cap, a cloche has almost no visible brim — just a small curved edge — which gives it that streamlined 1920s silhouette.
How do I wear a cloche hat at the correct angle for my face shape?
Tilt it slightly forward and to one side so the brim skims just above your eyebrow — that's the classic cloche angle. Round faces benefit from a sharper tilt to add definition; oval and heart-shaped faces can wear it closer to level. Pull a few strands of hair out at the temple if you want a softer frame around the face.
What is the difference between a cloche hat and a bucket hat?
A cloche is fitted and structured, hugging the head closely with barely any brim, while a bucket hat has a wider, downward-sloping brim and a looser, more casual crown. Cloche hats read as dressier and vintage-inspired; bucket hats lean sporty and relaxed. If you want a polished, tailored look, the cloche is the better pick.
How much warmer is a fur cloche than a wool one in real terms?
Roughly one layer's worth. A farm-raised fur cloche stays comfortable well below freezing, while wool felt is better suited to cold-but-dry days down to around -5°C (23°F). If you're dealing with a harsh winter climate or long time outdoors, fur is the one that won't leave you reaching for a scarf.
Does a wool cloche hat hold its shape in rain or snow?
It holds up reasonably well in light rain or snow flurries, since dense felted wool resists moisture short-term, but it isn't waterproof. Shake off snow before it melts into the fibers, and let it air-dry away from direct heat if it does get wet. Repeated soaking will eventually soften the shape, so avoid wearing it in sustained heavy rain.
How do I care for a leather, suede, or sheepskin cloche hat?
Wipe leather and sheepskin with a dry or slightly damp cloth and let them air dry naturally, away from radiators or direct sun. Suede needs a soft brush to lift dust and restore the nap — never soak it. Store all three on a hat stand or stuffed with tissue paper to hold the crown's shape between wears.
Can I wear a cloche hat with short hair, or is it better for long hair?
Both work well — a cloche actually flatters short hair especially since the close fit doesn't compete with volume the way it can with longer styles. With long hair, tuck it back or let a few pieces fall at the temples so the brim's line stays visible. There's no hair length this silhouette doesn't suit.
What outfits look good with a women's cloche hat?
A cloche pairs naturally with tailored coats, slip dresses, and midi skirts — anything with a bit of vintage or minimalist structure. For everyday wear, it also works over a simple sweater and jeans if you want one statement piece rather than a full period look. Keep the rest of the outfit simple so the hat stays the focal point.
Cloche hat vs beret — which is more formal?
A cloche generally reads as more formal, since its structured, bell-shaped crown has a tailored, finished look that suits eveningwear and office settings. A beret is softer and more casual by nature — easy to dress up, but naturally relaxed. If you're choosing between the two for a dressier occasion, the cloche is the safer pick.
Are your cloche hats handmade, and where are they produced?
Yes. Each cloche and flapper hat here is individually shaped and stitched in our Ukraine workshop — part of a family craft we've practiced for more than 15 years. Because every piece is shaped by hand rather than run through a mold, small natural variations between hats are expected, not a flaw.
