Ushanka Hats
Two blacks, two textures. Sleek mink where the hat meets the wind, plush arctic fox where it meets your face.
The deep brim is black arctic fox — thick, rounded and soft enough to sink your fingers into. The ear flaps are black mink on the outside, short and glossy, and lined with the same black fox on the inside. A black suede strap with metal snaps closes them under the chin. The result is a black ushanka that looks completely monochrome from a distance and surprisingly rich up close, where the satin sheen of the mink plays against the matte depth of the fox.
Why Mink on the Outside of the Flaps
Ear flaps take more abuse than any other part of a fur hat. They brush against coat collars, scarves and bag straps all day. Mink handles that friction well: its short, flat hair doesn't snag or tangle, and it shrugs off light snow. Meanwhile the fox lining stays protected inside, doing what it does best — keeping cheeks and ears warm.
A padded insulated lining and an inner drawstring complete the build. With flaps down and snapped, this fur trapper hat is rated for about −25°C. Every one is cut and assembled by hand in our family workshop in Ukraine from farm-raised mink and arctic fox, with pelts chosen so both blacks sit in the same tone.
Down or Tied Back: Wearing This Black Mink Hat
For real cold, bring the flaps down and close the suede strap — the fox seals the sides of the face completely. On milder days, pull the flaps back and tie them behind the head with the cord; the mink outer side then frames the hat neatly and the face stays open.
Like the pairing but want it light? Our white mink ushanka with arctic fox combines the same two furs in white. Prefer a silvery brim? There's a silver fox version of this mink ushanka. Want a leather crown instead? See the black arctic fox aviator hat.

Questions People Ask
Will the black mink and black fox match in color?
Yes — we pair them on purpose. Each hat gets mink and fox pelts laid side by side under daylight before cutting, so the two blacks sit in the same tone. What you'll notice is a difference in finish, not color: the mink has a soft satin sheen, while the fox looks deeper and more matte. That contrast in texture is what keeps an all-black hat from looking flat.
Full fur or a leather top — which all-black option suits me better?
Both use black arctic fox around the face, but the rest of the build differs. This ushanka has mink ear flaps and a full fur look, which feels warmer and more luxurious. The aviator has a smooth leather crown and fox flaps, so it's lighter and sheds wet snow faster. Pick the mink version for deep frost and a dressier look; pick leather for wet, windy city winters.
Can I wear earbuds or headphones under the flaps?
Small in-ear earbuds fit comfortably under the flaps, and the fox lining even helps block street noise. Over-ear headphones are a different story — they push the flaps outward and break the seal around the face. If you take calls outside, a thin earbud with a microphone near the mouth works best, since the fur can muffle your voice slightly.
Do the tied-back flaps stay in place while walking?
They do, as long as the cord is tied in a proper bow or knot rather than a loose loop. The mink outer side lies flat against the back of the hat, so the flaps don't flap around in the wind. If you walk fast in gusty weather, tuck the strap ends under the knot. Untie and bring them down whenever the temperature drops.
Can the suede chin strap get wet?
Light snow is fine; just let it air-dry at room temperature. Avoid soaking it — suede can stiffen and darken if it's drenched and dried on a radiator. If the strap gets wet, blot it with a towel, let it dry, then rub it gently with your fingers or a soft suede brush to raise the nap again. The metal snaps are rust-resistant.
Is this black ushanka warm enough for −30°C?
It's rated for about −25°C during normal activity like walking or commuting. At −30°C and below, it still protects well with the flaps fastened, but for long periods standing still — waiting at a stop, watching an outdoor event — add a scarf or neck gaiter under the chin. The weakest point in deep cold is usually the neck, not the hat.
Does mink lose its shine over the years?
Not with sensible care. Mink keeps its sheen as long as the hair isn't dried out or crushed. Keep the hat away from radiators and direct sun, store it on a form so the flaps hang freely, and avoid hairspray near it. Once a season, a professional fur cleaner can refresh the gloss. Most mink hats look much the same after a decade as they did on day one.
Is this a good choice if I already own a black coat with a fur collar?
Yes, as long as the collar fur is a different texture. A mink or fox collar in the same black can look like too much fur in one place. A wool coat with a shearling or rabbit collar works well, and so does a plain black coat with no fur at all. When in doubt, wear a scarf between the collar and the flaps to separate the two.
