Men's Newsboy Caps & Flat Caps

Men's newsboy caps and flat caps handmade in Ukraine — 8-panel baker boy and Gatsby caps in tweed, wool, cotton and linen, plus classic flat caps and driver caps. Sizes 55–62 cm, for every season.

Newsboy Caps Built to Sit Right

A well-made newsboy cap just sits right. The eight-panel crown gives it that rounded shape, the short brim keeps it sharp, and the button on top holds it all together. These caps go back to the early 1900s — newsboys, dock workers, factory hands — and they still work today if you want vintage character without looking like you raided a costume shop.

Our workshop in Ukraine makes them by hand, using traditional construction cut for modern proportions. Every cap is shaped so it keeps its form through repeated wear instead of collapsing after a season.

Newsboy Cap or Flat Cap?

Newsboy cap (also called baker boy, Gatsby, paperboy or 8-panel cap) — a fuller crown made from eight panels with a button on top. More volume, more vintage, more personality.

Flat cap (also called driver cap, scally cap or ivy cap) — built from fewer pieces, it sits close to the head with a lower, sleeker profile and no button. Cleaner and more understated; it goes well under a hood or with a tailored coat.

Rule of thumb: newsboy if you want the cap to be noticed, flat cap if you want it to quietly finish the outfit.

Tweed, Wool, Cotton or Linen

Tweed and wool — the autumn and winter caps. Dense, warm, good against wind, and the classic grey tweed looks right with everything from a waxed jacket to a wool overcoat.

Cotton — the all-rounder for spring and early autumn. Breathable, easy to care for, and it keeps a crisp shape. Black and cocoa.

Linen — the summer newsboy. Light, airy and it softens with wear. Plain beige, white and burgundy, or plaid in white and black for a bit more texture.

Getting the Fit Right

Too tight and a cap perches on top of your head; too loose and it looks sloppy. Measure around your head just above the ears — ideally at the end of the day — and choose that size. Our men's caps come in 55–62 cm (21.5–24.5"). If you're between sizes, go up. You'll know it fits when there's no red line on your forehead after an hour. Full guide: hat size guide.

How to Wear a Newsboy Cap

Smart-casual — a wool coat or blazer, an Oxford shirt, chinos. The tweed newsboy or flat cap is made for this.

Weekend — jeans, a henley or a chunky sweater, boots. Cotton in black or cocoa.

Summer — a linen shirt, light trousers or shorts. Linen newsboy in white, beige or plaid.

Tilted slightly to one side is the classic vintage move; straight across reads cleaner and more modern. Skip the full three-piece suit unless you're deliberately going for a 1920s look.

Men's Newsboy Caps — Questions

What is the difference between a newsboy cap and a flat cap?

A newsboy cap has a fuller, rounder crown made from eight panels with a button on top. A flat cap is built from fewer pieces, sits close to the head with a lower profile and has no button. Newsboy is more vintage and noticeable; flat cap is sleeker and more understated.

Are a Gatsby hat, baker boy and newsboy cap the same thing?

Yes. Gatsby, baker boy, paperboy, cabbie and 8-panel cap are all names for the newsboy cap. "Baker boy" sometimes describes a slightly fuller crown, but the construction is the same.

What is the difference between a driving cap, ivy cap and scally cap?

All three are flat cap variations. A driving cap has a slightly stiffer brim, originally to keep the sun out of a driver's eyes. An ivy cap is softer and more relaxed. Scally cap is the name used for a flat cap in Boston and Ireland.

Which face shape suits a newsboy cap?

Oval and long faces suit the fuller newsboy crown — the volume adds width that balances a longer face. Round faces usually look better in a flat cap, which sits closer to the head and doesn't add height. In the end, the mirror is the best judge.

Is a tweed newsboy cap warm enough for winter?

For a city winter around zero and a little below, yes — tweed and wool block wind and keep the top of your head warm. It doesn't cover the ears, so for real cold below -10°C, switch to a fur hat or ushanka.

How do I clean a wool or tweed cap without shrinking it?

Brush it every couple of weeks with a soft clothes brush. Spot-clean marks with a barely damp cloth and mild soap — dab, don't rub. Never put it in a washing machine. If the crown flattens, hold it over steam for 30–60 seconds, reshape it by hand and let it dry stuffed with tissue paper.

What size newsboy cap do men usually wear?

Most men measure 57–60 cm. Measure your own head just above the ears rather than guessing — our men's caps come in 55–62 cm, and between sizes it's better to go up.
